One of the interesting things in this chapter is the mention of the Fall Equinox. Now, one could talk about the Equinox topic on and on...As mentioned, Varina reminds the reader of the significance of the Fall Equinox...she is speaking about the departure of the Old Friends:
"....They must all leave by the stroke of midnight on the Fall Equinox or they will die,"
So....delightfully so....there are a number of interesting discussion points here.
1. The Fall Equinox
2. The Old Friends in general - who are they? What are they doing in Medelia, etc.?
3. The Friends needing to leave the World of the Humans - "at the stroke of midnight on the Fall Equinox"
4. One of the Old Friends wants to stay past the Equinox (that if course is Junia) and why does she want to stay???
Let's have some fun with this.........(which I did in the writing of this chapter)
1. First - the Fall Equinox - now for starters, I am not an expert on anything to do with the Spring or Fall Equinox............but that does not mean - one can not have loads of fun exploring these themes.
From Wikipedia: "The September Equinox is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator."
Again from Wikipedia: "The celestial equator is a great circle on the imaginary celestial sphere, in the same plane as the Earth's equator. In other words, it is a projection of the terrestrial equator out into space. As a result of the Earth's axial tilt, the celestial equator is inclined by 23.4 degrees with respect to the ecliptic plane.
Again from Wikipedia: (with reference to the ecliptic plane) "The sun seems to move against the background stars as seen from the orbiting Earth. The Ecliptic is the path the sun appears to trace through the stars. The Earth completes its orbit and the sun traces its entire path in little over 365 days."
(more on this later :)
